Did you take these with the kit lens? They look really sharp and clear. Congrats

Great Shots!

Keep it out of AUTO. Shoot manual.

As far as a lens to get, the 18-55 is actually a really good lens. But if you are looking for something sharper and faster and you are on a budget get the 35mm f/1.8 or the 50mm f/1.8. They are REALLY fast and have ridiculous quality for a sub $200 lens. On par with $1600 lenses. Plus they teach you to use the heal/toe zoom method

If you got some bucks to spend... Well it depends on what you want to shoot? If you want a good general lens that has great performance and VR get the 18-200 VR. It's a good lens if you want an all in one lens. Other than that tell us what kinda stuff you want to shoot and we can go from there

35mm - http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/35mm-f18.htm
50mm - http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018daf.htm
18mm-200mm - http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm

Good luck!

keep in mind that the 50mm won't autofocus on your D40.

Nice kit i have the same one. Yea the lens are pricey but thats what makes pics so much better is the lens not as much of the body. And think u can take pics any where and not get in trouble with it now car parts can get u in a ton. Also most people into cars are into taking pics as well.I love both hobbies amoung others i have. Now why not keep it on auto. I try and shoot as much as i can in Manual just for good practice. I also have a 55-200 VR lens is this a ok lens i got it for less than $200 is the main reason i got it. I like to shoot cars, landscape and buildings in the city. Any lens u guys suggest for this
