it would mean a pretty pricey upgrade. DX mode is reduced to 6mp - so everyone would have to virtually get all new lenses to take full advantage of the D700. 6mp is fine - especially if the overall pictures have low noise, but I still wouldn't mind a higher pixel count for when I need to crop more than I should.
I shoot with D300 for now, I think I can live w/o switching.

I was always skeptical of the DX future. I never invested heavily in DX lenses, no one glass >$1K, and now it seems that may pay off for me. Nikon made huge marketing efforts 'back when' to assure their shooters DX format had a long future with them. While this is technically still true, maybe they'll offer a significant trade-in value on some new lenses?

I was this close of getting a 17-55 f/2.8 DX, but for no apparent reason I held off of purchase. Then last year's D3 announcement reassure me of staying with my "regular" lens choices. Anyway, I can't wait, my pre-ordered D700 will arrive in a few weeks.
