My friend here in New York is really into this stuff as well. Just last week he started his daughter in the hobby and I was able to see some of the things that can be done with the control lines. AWESOME stuff!

Yes, exactly!! We used to watch the kites fight to the finish.

Man, havent seen or even thought of that childhood memory in over 30 years

Wow thats really cool. I have a small kite that is shaped like a plane and it has a propeller that spins in the wind. It's pretty fun. Do you happen to have any pics (they don't have to be yours) of the kites that are big as houses? I'd like to see those.

This chap is quite famous in the world of big kites

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Lynn

At the UK's biggest festival (Washington Kite festival, 60,000+ people) several years ago he had a line (rope) snap and lost a kite into a large power pylon that caused a major power outage in the area

How this for a big kite for you

What do the wind speeds need to be for something like that?

yea, we do fly them high
In the UK we can't fly above 200ft without agreement from the CAA due to the risk to aircraft. For festivals the organiser normally gets a get licence so we can go much much higher

Here's another small kite from the weekend.

We were at Harewood House (nr Leeds) for a festival. More to follow when I get a chance tomorrow.
