Default San Francisco visit

Recently visited my uncle in SF just for fun. First family trip with my camera.

Almost all taken with the 18-105 D90 kit lens.

That kit lens in pretty sharp, you have to many photos here for me to offer critiques. One thing I am wondering is if that lens is back focusing on some of these shots.

From what I just googled, back focusing is when AF focuses on the object behind what is desired, correct in some form?

A lot of times when I was taking pictures I used single spot AF and a few times the box where it was focused on wasn't always where the subject I wanted. So I kinda just shot anyways since I can't "fine tune" that box. There are a lot of AF areas but some pictures happened to be right out of one. Should I concentrate on making sure the little box is always on my subject, not near or around (I know near is okay if distance does not vary much depth wise)?

Also, is it always sharper near the center or does this vary by lens (i.e. some may be sharp all over?)

If your focus point is not the sharpest in the frame than your lens needs calibration.

I love the seagull and the chain pics.

A suggestion: some of your focal points are a bit too close to the edge...kinda outside of the rule of 3rds. If they were in just a hair, it would make a big difference i think. Great shots though!

I don't know what camera you were using, but a lot of times you can set the camera to "Single" focus mode, where it focuses on a point and freezes the camera there. Put your focus box on what you want in focus, half-depress the shutter button to lock in that focus distance, then compose your shot from where you stand. As long as you don't change the distance to subject, the shot should end up how you intended.

I'm pretty sure he's shooting with a D90.

OP: Nice shots!

I especially like the seagull shot with Alcatraz in the background.
