Default Traveling with camera?

It kinda feels like a stupid question but:

I'm flying for the first time with my DSLR. I've packed it in a hard case in my carry on luggage and was wondering if there's anything I should know or expect or even take into consideration as far as security checkpoints and such... Should I pull it out at the checkpoint with my laptop or just leave it in it's case.

Thanks.

well, it's in a hard case they might ask you to pull it out regardless. When I fly, i just leave mine in a backpack and run it through the x-ray. Just make sure you're on the other side to intercept so as to not have someone else handle it and potentially damage the goods.

I travel w/ a pretty full kit often and the only thing I routinely have to pull out for them is the little bag w/ about 30 rechargeable AA's (i do a lot of off camera flash). Other than that, just an occassional wipe down test.

I'm with Allen - I tend to use my camera backpack as my carry on, so I keep everything in there, plus the tootbrush and a few necessities for emergencies.

I put the whole pack through the X-Ray machine.

Funny this came up though. I'm planning for my Alaska trip, and was going to ask another friend who travels a bit what he uses (he carries quite a bit of stuff). Wonder if he's moved onto a commercial type carrier. hmmm...

Thanks for all the responses. I pulled the hard case out of the suitcase just to make sure things would go a bit quicker. They didn't have me open the case or anything, just let me right on through so all is well.

When I travel I take my lowerpro backpack and use it as a carry on. Trust me, you don't want it checked in. Those guys throw your bags like footballs.

never had any problems so far.
