[B]I think I'll start shooting @ the higher resolutions - at least 1,600x1,200 - but my next question is what level of compression do people suggest for JPG?

IBM Micro Drives are great but it takes longer to write to one than it does to a flash card.

It also depends on the speed of the CF media you are comparing to. Older cards are much slower than some of the newer technology, i.e., Sandisk Ultra cards. CF cards are available in sizes over 1 GB now, although at those prices the Micro-Drives are much cheaper.

Say Bieg, have you spent any time on Michael Reichmann's site, the Luminous Landscape? I get lost on there once a day at least

I recently got a Sony CD Mavica MVC-400/w Carl Zeiss lens, 4.0 megapixel, and I love it. It takes great pics, and has sound with the movies.

Took these with my old and outdated Nikon Coolpix 800, only has 2.14 megapixels but still pretty good quality imo..

Both the pictures below were taken using slow shutter speed due to the dim lighting and using only one hand hence the slight blur...

I'm not sure how long ago 8th grade was for you but I also have experience with film/darkrooms. I used to be employed by a studio in LA back in the late 80's.

I was thinking of getting the Fuji FinePix 3800. I've heard great things about this camera too (except that it's only ISO 100, which isn't too surprising from a digicam).

What do you guys think of it
