Blizzak MZ-01 vs Arctic Alpin
I bought Vlad's (BlackS2000) Michelin Arctic Alpins last year and I put them on my car today and went out for a drive in the fresh snow.
As you all know, I was running the Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 in the rear and Goodrich Winter Slalom in the front till now. All are the stock sizes.
In that snow drag race we had some years ago, Vlad was the only one to be able to keep up to me. I only beat him by about 1/2 to 1 car length down the Silver City back parking lot.
The Alpins are "almost" as good as the MZs, but not quite (but we knew that). They take a bit more finesse to get going in the snow while the MZs, you can almost just drop the clutch and they'll dig in and go.
I've always said that the MZs had problems with high speed stability in curves. Getting up to 100 kph on a sweeper, the car seemed to wallow. I can tell you that the Alpins are solid at speed in a curve. Not a bad trade-off --- a tiny bit of loss of snow bite for quite a bit of stability at speed.
BTW, as soon as I get my old rims and snow tires cleaned up, they're for sale.
The fronts are still like new and should be good for another 5 winters. The rears are getting a bit thin in the center but should be good for one more winter. (Might wait till next fall, though.)
