Default border question

does it matter which gate you cross? im planning on crossing hte Kingsgate border crossing but i heard that there are different charges for each gate.

Also, do you get charged for crossing bc/alberta border?

im trying to find the cheapest route from Portland, OR to Edmonton, AB

thanks!

No charges that I have ever run into...unless you are importing something. If it is just you and the car it shouldn't cost you a cent.

Are you just travelling between the countries?

All you need is a passport, OR drivers license and original birth certificate.

Ah you should have mentioned that when you started the thread!

If you live in Alberta, come across at Coutts. If you live in BC, probably Blaine.

Hey portland! That's where I bought my car from. However I have no clue which gate I went through because I had a shipper ship my car. But I do believe there is no charge to whichever gate, just remember the 72 hour rule.

I came through the Sweetgrass/Coutts border crossing on Friday with my new M3...my son was with me and commented on how nasty both US and Canadian customs guys were. When you tell 'em you're bringing a car across, first thing they ask (on the US side) is whether they've had the paperwork for 72 hours...then they growl at you to go wait over there until we call you. Whole process took 40 minutes on the US side, 20 minutes on the Canadian side. Bastards charge GST on the purchase price AND the duty.

hmm..i checked mapquest, and the fastest route would be going through kingsgate. coutts is directly south of alberta, but i would have to drive an hour or two more. so you guys are saying it doesnt matter which one i go through? theyre all about the same?

so at the border, i have to pass both the US and canadian customs correct?

thanks, sorry im a bit of a noob at doing this as it is my first time even crossing the US border!!
