Car Buying Frustration
My girlfriend and I are finally ready to buy her a new car. We decided on a 3 door Yaris CE hatch with the LE convenience package.
I've done my homework, and I see that Toyota is offering the following rebates on this car:
Incentive Type Value Term Expiry
Cash Incentives
Security Deposit Waiver $0.00 1/2/2008
Trading Dollars/Factory to Dealer Rebate $750.00 1/2/2008
Graduate Program $500.00 1/2/2008
General Comments
The Graduate Program can be combined with any other available factory incentive. Please check with dealer regarding eligibility and further details. This program is to be applied to the after tax amount.
No Security Deposit on all leases.
Trading Dollars/Factory to Dealer Rebate can not be combined with any other available factory incentive.
As part of the Wrap-up Event Toyota Canada offers its customers a 1% Pre-GST Reduction which is to be applied to the after tax amount. Please note although it is advertised as a 1% GST Reduction, the dealer receives only $150 for every eligible vehicle. Any amount over $150 will have to be added to the Wholesale Price Total. Please consult your dealer for further details.
The frustrating part is that dealers will not admit this $750.00 factory to dealer rebate exists. They're all trying to say there is absolutely no profit in the car, when I know for a fact that even based on the MSRP vs. the wholesale price, they have $1200~ there, plus holdback, and then add this $750 on top of that... leaving about $2-2.2k worth of actual profit.
(Actually, there is the $150 GST credit as well).
All we're trying to do is get this roughly split down the middle and no one wants to come close.
Any suggestions?

Try another dealership...cause when I bought my Celica back in '03 brand new, the salesperson suggested all the incentives I could get. I wasn't even elligible for the graduate program at the time either but they just told me to use someone else's name that I know that has graduated from a post secondary recently and it'll work just fine.
That was my experience with Toyota, and it was great. So my only suggestion is to find another dealership even if it's not a very good suggestion. Good luck Dylan!

Well, finally getting somewhere... got a few decent quotes finally.
Your trick on the graduate program will really work? How can you pull that when the person buying and the person who graduated aren't the same?
It'd be great because a friend of mine did just graduate from college last summer, I'm sure she'd let me use her name for this.

Update: bought from Kingsway Toyota here in Edmonton. Managed to get a price about $1500 off MSRP. Ironically yesterday I told the guys at Sherwood Park Toyota that $1500 off MSRP should be right around where this deal works out.
Funny...
Anyway, Kingsway Toyota was easy to deal with. We were in and out of there in 45 minutes, pick up the car on Saturday (they need to put in the head unit and accessories we added).

car buying experience in Canada is so painful IMHO.
Nevertheless, Congrats on the new car.

There is a reason car salespeople have a bad reputation... 95% of them deserve it.
It's even more frustrating meeting a good car salesperson and then they have asshole bosses (like the scenario at Sherwood Park Toyota).

Very nice! I don't know why everything always has to be a hassle...
If I end up buying a car new anytime I'll be heading to T&T. It's rare that I don't feel like a salesman is trying to pull something or hide something. I think the key is to bring someone neutral along with you, or to buy when you don't HAVE to so you don't get caught up in the exciting process of getting a new car.
