Evolution Performance Driving School!
I know a number of S2000 people have taken Evolution schools in the past and I'm sure they can vouch for how good the schools are.
Want the best learning possible? Well, there is no beating a proven system that works and SCCA National Champion drivers to show you how to do it! Learn from the best!
This coming June, we are at it again and hoping to add a Driver's Challenge to boot!
Ken Tubman has been transferred to Houston, Tx. and therefore is not able to help out much so Ambrose Fung - cscc solo 2 director this year - and I are heading the effort to put on the schools. We can get as many as schools (to a point) as we have people if know ahead of time what the interest is.
If you know someone else interested please pass this message on and/or post the following where you see fit.
Thanks!
Reijo
The Calgary Sports Car Club presents: The 2005 Evolution Schools
These are solo II/autoslalom schools taught by some of the best autocrossers in North America. This is a school for experienced drivers as well as for beginners. The instructors are all SCCA Solo2 National/Multi-National champions. They provide a high level of individualized instruction, so lessons are modified for different experience levels. You can benefit by taking these classes multiple times. Bring your driving skill to another level!
Phase 1 concentrates on physical skills such as hand movements, foot movements and car control. The student drives alone and with the instructor. Then the instructor drives, then the student drives again. There is *a lot* of seat time. There are also exercises in looking ahead, again with students and instructors taking turns driving.
Phase 2 focuses on the mental aspects of driving: looking ahead, where to look etc. There are exercises designed to help you get through a course with minimal preparation. Again, this is *a lot* of driving. It is great practice going through courses many times and getting to know the feel of your car. (Phase 1 is a prerequisite for Phase 2.)
Phase 3 pulls together the concepts of Phase 1 and 2 and then focuses on picking lines through a course - long vs. short vs. road racing type. Different lines are set up, tried and timed. Some of the line choices carry significantly more speed and may seem to be faster. Some of the results may surprise you. This course will help you to evaluate which line to choose in any given course......and give you a lot of seat time like all Evo courses do! Phases 1 and 2 are prerequisites.
Drivers Challenge course. Here's a brief description from the Evolution School folks: It is the school for making those gaps when they get bigger at bigger faster courses, it can help close that gap. Learning that on the edge feeling, the car as it gets out of line but staying with it, etc.
And from the Evolution website:
"Have you taken Phase 1 and Phase 2? Have you got some autocrossing seat time under your belt and reached a place where shaving time on course seems to be impossible? Are you trying to keep up on your looking ahead and thinking ahead? Then the Challenge school is for you!! In addition, if you run a Prepared or Modified car this school will allow you to practice the Phase 1 and Phase 2 concepts in your regular autocross car!
The Challenge school forces students to combine everything they have previously learned but on a longer, quicker, national style, real world autocross course, complete with quick slaloms and hard shut downs."
This course accepts only 10 people so the cost will be slightly higher (spreading the costs over 10, rather than 12 students). The course also takes a large lot/area.
More information is available at the Evolution web site at:
www.autocross.com/evolution
What will you need to take the classes? A car in good running condition. An acceptable Snell rated helmet (Snell 90 or newer). Tires with a lot of life left in them. (They don't need to be race tires but it can be good to take the class using the tires you usually use in events.) The only other requirement is a desire to have a lot of fun. These schools are a blast!
Dates: Saturday/Sunday, June 25-26, 2005.
These are all day classes.
Saturday dinner will include a wrap up of Phase 1.
Location: North lot of the Westerner Exhibition Grounds in Red Deer.
A non-refundable deposit of $50 will hold your spot (make check out to Calgary Sports Car Club) . At this time, I'm assuming each Phase will be $300 CDN, with a discount for taking 2 phases ($550 for both). T-shirts will be included for those taking 2 phases.
Deposits are being accepted now. The classes are filled on a first-come-first-served basis depending on the date I receive the deposit.
Complete payment will be due 3 weeks before the class. At that time, names will be taken from the waiting list to fill the classes. To help the club break even, course fees are not refundable unless the courses are full.
Deposit cheques should be made out to Calgary Sports Car Club and mailed to:
Reijo Silvennoinen,
#90, #305-4625 Varsity Drive NW
Calgary, Alberta T3A 0Z9
Please include contact information, including email and phone number, with your cheque. You should also indicate your preference for phases.
Proposed Schedule:
Phase 1, Saturday, June 25, 2005
Phase 2, Sunday, June 26, 2005
Phase 3, Sat. or Sun. depending on entries/scheduling
Drivers Challenge, Sunday, June 26, 2005
The final schedule depends on meeting minimum sign up levels for each class.

Reijo, I have always wanted to do this. I would love the chance to improve my skills through the cones, anyone else want to join me ? I think this would be alot of fun and improve our street merit to boot !! This is what our car was built for, handling supremecy.
Oh, if anyone needs cheap lodging in Red Deer that weekend (ie: free), I will try my best to give a couple of people a place to stay.
I am in the process of selling the house, but I'm still planning on renting a townhouse or detached home with a garage.

Sounds great! I know you won't be disappointed. I don't know of any negative feedback and lots of very, very positive feedback from local attendees....including seasoned soloists. I, personally, have never seen such transformation of driving skills as I have seen at a local Evo School.
Furthermore, this is the only Evolution School in Canada! This is a very unique opportunity.
Note that I will be taking Evo classes as well....for a third year. :^)

Well, we've got interested parties in Winnipeg. Corey Dyck is coming out from Winnipeg to do a couple of schools. He did two schools - phases 1 and 2 I believe 4 years ago (?) when we had the first Evolution Performance Driving School in Red Deer.
If you are interested, get your deposit in and that will secure your place. There have been waiting lists in previous years.
I should also mention that there is about a 6:1 student:instructor ratio so you get a lot of attention and pointers that most schools cannot match.....all with US national champions - pretty hard to beat, IMHO.

Not a problem - will keep you at the head of the list as per this list information.
Each course is an entire day (8-5 pm with a short working lunch! Heck, even a pen and pad of paper for making notes is a good idea!) so I would recommend that you do the Phase 1 on Saturday and Phase 2 on Sunday.
LOL.....I remember a few years ago taking Phase 1 & 2 on a single weekend and when I left the lot to drive home Sunday evening I caught myself just tearing around the corners before I realized what was happening.......much faster than I would normally drive and yet far from the limits.......and other cars were quickly disappearing in the mirrors! LOL! It was amazing.
But, you know, even Olympic athletes have coaches......why shouldn't we?
