Help With Snow Tires
Hi guys,
I will be purchasing snow tires this week. Can I get some help with brand and sizes. Also feedback on your snow tires from driving around all day today.
Has anyone found replacement steel rims for winter that will fit. I have heard that the wheels from the Honda Odyssey might fit. The problem is the rear wheel size.
Anybody have dealings with RPM Racing/Roberto/32 Ave. N.E.? I looked at the shop and it's very impressive. They even have a brand new spray booth. These guys specialize in Honda/Acura and had about 8 cars they were working on or storing in the back of the shop. He gave me some prices:
TOYO GARRET (winter tire)
205/55/16 $163 each + GST
225/50/16 $174 each + GST
Mount/Balance $80 + GST (I think they sub it out)
BLIZZAK
none available
KUHMO KW15 (winter tire)
205/55/16 $142 each + GST
225/50/16 $160 each + GST
Mount/Balance $80 + GST (I think they sub it out)
Back to summer tires...
Has anybody had any experience with KUHMO 712 replacement tires. Roberto at RPM said that quite a few S2000 guys who take theire cars to the track use these. I have also heard that these are great from another friend who has these on his Porche. The tires last longer than the SO2's, a little better in the rain, and HALF THE PRICE! Prices are:
KUHMO 712 (summer tire)
205/55/16 $138 each + GST
225/50/16 $152 each + GST
Roberto said that if more guys bought he would reduce prices by about 5 points.

I've had my differences with Roberto Vlatkovic in the past (5 years ago+). The company does some impressive work I'll agree, but the moral and ethical character of the owner is debatable, in my opinion at least.
At the end of the day, you're only buying tires. Purchase them from the place that gives you the best deal.
Good luck Vlad!

I posted some "help" in the other thread "Winter's Back" that might be of interest to you about buying Blizzaks at Blaskin & Lane.
For your summer tires, just remember that a non OEM SO2 rear tire needs to be ordered in a 245/45 size to be close to what the stock tire is. For winter tires, stick with the stock sizes as a slightly narrower rear winter tire is actually a good thing. Come meet with us on Monday and you'll see mine, Danny's and Tim's.
PS. You're paying almost as much for those Toyos. Blizzaks are by far a better winter tire. I don't even think Kumo winter tires are even in the same ball park. PLUS, I wouldn't have my tires done at a place that has to farm out the mounting and balancing.
The 712's summer tire has been talked about a lot lately on this forum. MIXED REVIEWS. Check out those threads to see.

I replied also in the "winter is back" thread. If I were to get winter tires again I would go with
Michelin Pilot Alpine or
Blizzaks LM 22
Where ever you get them, just make sure they don't scratch your rims if you are using the stock rims.
About RPM, they are good for body work and paint but for mechanical things I wouldn't use them. Their painting is also questionable, I would go with paint specialists. If you check around you'll find better places to get whatever you are getting, go to a specialist in the field rather than generalists.

I put a set of new Yokohama AVS Winter 901s on my S2K a couple of weeks ago...I've had a set of the old Blizzaks (Type R,) as well as the LM22s (BMW 330xi), and these new Yokos outperform them on all fronts. In the dry, they are much better than any snow tires I've had, no tread squirm, stiff sidewalls that keep a good measure of the S2K turn-in crispness...and quiet, too.
To get any info on these tires you gotta go to the Yokohama Web site or search on the name/model and wade through a bunch of European web pages. Tire Rack and other online sellers don't have 'em or know anything about 'em.
This past weekend we had a nasty little dump that left the roads pretty treacherous for a few hours...I drove from the airport to Springbank Friday at about 1 a.m., and there were literally a dozen cars in the ditch along the way...the Yokos performed flawlessly. The driveway up to my house is pretty long and steep, and is unplowed (not a public road) that my 4Runner slips and claws its way up when the roads are icy; the S2k made it up with no problem.
I was all set to go with a set of the Dunlop Winter Sports, when Bashir at Kal Tire in Calgary talked me into trying the Yokos...he was right (again)...
Cost was about $930 mounted on the car, but I sprang for the $100 balance Kal Tire does at the 42 Ave. store that puts load on the tire and wheel and is IMO a superior way to balance a high performance tire (absolutely NO vibration at any speed or on any road surface).
Anyone who wants to have a look or try them out, just let me know.

The standard S02s are supposed to be discontinued but the OEM S02s are still being produced of course, wouldn't know where to get them short of a Honda dealer.
The S03s are the replacements for normal S02s.
