Default HID high beams

Back when I had my '02 RSX-S I had HID's retrofitted. When I traded that car in for my first S2000, I sold the kit to a buddy of mine. He's now potentially trading in his car, so I might take the HID's off his hands.

My question is basically, am I crazy?

I'd have to find a place to mount the ballasts, first of all. Second of all, how badly do I need HID highbeams?

Please let me know how insane I am, thanks!

Two sets of HIDs inside the headlights might create too much heat.

The high beams double as your daytime running lights. The S2000 sends a 6 volt signal to the high beams in DRL mode (the entire headlight/DRL circuit is controlled by a DRL black box). You'll have to rewire the lights to provide 12 volts to the ballasts. And depending on how simple or how complex you want to make it, you may have to do away completely with your DRL or have your DRLs running at full blast (I don't think there's any in between with HIDs). And if you do use them as DRLs, you have to have them turn off when the regular high beams turn on. There's a little work here.

But, I've read on this site about people who have retro fitted HIDs. I don't know what the details of the install were. Maybe a simple pair of relays that could be driven by 6 and 12 volts would do it. That would keep the DRL functionality. The only difference is the DRLs run at full blast. No different than driving around with your headlights on all the time.

Chris.

Chris-- I have my DRL's disabled as of right now. I know they're a safety feature, but I like the clean look of the car without the DRL's on.

Dave-- Good thought about the heat. That does concern me a bit.

The addition of HID highbeams in terms of heat shouldn't be a big issue unless you use the high beams excessively. I've never measured the actual temperature that an HID bulb gives out but rough experiments with halogen bulb and hid bulb held near my hand show that the halogens put out more heat.
