Housing options in Edmonton
Not exactly what I had in mind, but I may be moving to Edmonton for a year (then off to Calgary as I originally planned). I don't really know a whole hell of a lot about the city (in terms of housing). I'm maybe looking at living in Leduc with my Dad/Step-mom, but as it stands they haven't even started construction, so who knows if that's even an option.
So as an alternative I need to look into some other options.
What does a townhouse/duplex with a single/double car garage (new), generally sell for up there?

What's going to happen to your house in Red Deer? Renting it out?
Its been a while since I looked, but the best I can suggest is to check out http://www.mls.ca
Good luck and keep us posted!

Housing in Edmonton is quite affordable compared to Calgary. In fact it may even be similar to what you're paying in Red Deer.
Depending on what area you're going to work, you may want to look at St. Albert, it is an excellent community to live and raise a family and has excellent parks and a small town feel with easy access to the city. Leduc is more industrial, although it does have easy access to the airport and would be much closer to Red Deer as well.
We lived in Edmonton for a number of years and I still visit quite frequently, it is a wonderful place to live in during the summer months, but the winters just kill you.
I also lived in Red Deer for a couple of years and found that Edmonton is much more windy which really affects the wind chill factor in the winter months.
Good luck on your move.

What are you looking into? If it's just a year, I would think renting would be your best option. It's quick, no worries about selling the place either since you're going to be out in a year. I rented for a year last year so if you have any questions, let me know.

Hey, consider the renting thoroughly.......it may likely be cheaper than buying! If you are paying a sizeable mortgage, calculate what your interest (plus expenses plus the real estate fee when selling....real estate fees are almost your rent for 3/4 of a year!) is per month and then decide.
I remember many years ago, I decided to not buy because I couldn't guarantee I was going to be around for a minimum of 3 years to break even on a house! It was the right move despite everything others said to me. In the short term, numbers can be deceiving!
Oh, and the best place in Edmonton? Just get outta there and come to Calgary!

Believe me, if I can convince my investors that we need to start in Calgary, I will do it. But it also depends on what sort of retail space is available in both cities.
I'm hoping I can luck out and find a good spot by the new ikea in Calgary @ heritage dr, or at south edmonton common by the ikea there.
I lucked out good on this house in red deer. When I go to sell it soon here, I'll probably walk away with about $25,000 to $40,000 in my pocket after paying commissions and all that.

For a one bedroom in that area it shouldn't run more then $700 for a pretty decent place. My guess is you're looking for underground parking though so it may be a bit tougher. I rented at Windsor Park Plaza near the University. It was around $870 a month including underground parking...gym, swimming pool, movie theatre, pool table...the pad was quite nice too. You're in the centre of everything as well.
