Question for Calgary folks
What do you folks think of CNRL - Horizon ?
Just received an invitation from them to talk about an open position they have. I have yet to call them and schedule an interview but I want to get your opinion of this firm.
The assignment is based out of Calgary with possibility of relocation to Fort McMurray in 2 years. Quite frankly, I would negotiate to have permanent assignment in Calgary. Not a fan of Fort Mac.

Canadian Natural Resources Limited. They do oil and gas.

Bobby, I think I may know someone who worked there a few years back as an engineer. Let me check with them and see what they thought.

Chances are they are looking for onsite engineers. It will be next to impossible to stay in Calgary. They are planning on erecting a new site in Fort Mac.
From what I hear, CNRL offers nice signing packages and bonuses for engineers. But they don't treat they operators as well...this info came from an ex-operator of theirs.

Hey Bobby,
I just got off the phone with my buddy Steve. He worked for CNRL about five years ago as an engineer on a new gas field project. He was based out of Calgary, and worked there for about 2 to 3 years. He says CNRL has a reputation for being a sweat shop. They pay average salaries, but expect a lot from their people. There's a lot of overtime being put in. He found it frustrating, as someone who went above the call of duty to make sure projects were successful, that he didn't see a personal return on his hard work. And of course, it's got all the problems of working for an extremely large company. Things happen slowly, and the gap between the employees and upper management seem very large.
His advice is that if they offer you a contract position which you can bill hourly, it's a great place to work. There's lots of stuff to do and bill for. As an employee on salary, he wouldn't work there again. As a note, Steve now is an independent contractor and loves it (though not doing work for CNRL!).
Honestly though, this sounds like my first experience when I worked at my last job as an employee. I'm also an independent contractor now. For those who like to work hard, and would never consider anything less than 100% all the time, it's tough getting fully compensated as an employee when you see people around you putting in half the effort and being paid and promoted the same. If you're looking for a place to come in the morning, pass eight hours, and go home, CNRL is a good place to do it. Both Steve and I agree on that.
So, take it for what it's worth, just a couple of guys' opinions. I hope it helps.
Chris.
