Default Replace Drivers Side Door and Window, please help

Hello All,

OK, let me preface this by saying i am a complete noob when it comes to car repairs, so please address responses accordingly, anyway, on to the problems.

I recently purchased an 03 S2K at auction, had some body damage to the drivers side front fender and door and passenger side rear quarter panel. I have purchased a replacement door, got the old door off and mounted the new door on, but now im stuck.

Issue 1: How do i remove the key lock mechanism from my old door and install it into the new one? I have found the thread ayelein created and the pages from the manual posted by 3ngin33r1 but was wondering if anyone had some tips to make it a bit easier.

Managed to figure this part out with the help of a couple mechanic friends, there is a second retaining ring, this one more of a wire than a c washer, that holds the lock mechanism to the door handle. Turns out i didnt have to remove the electronic actuator or the manual actuator piece in order to get the lock out. Got the lock out and installed in the new door. Everything still works.

Issue 2: How do i align the new door so it doesn't run into my fender? When i removed the old door i left the hinges on the car and then put the new door on, there isnt really any play in those bolts to the door and the bolts on the car are factory tight. Was i supposed to remove the fender and then reinstall after the door is on? The fender is no loss as i was going to replace it anyway, but i need to solve this before i get the new one.

Issue 3: once i get the above two solved, i will also be replacing the window and swapping the regulator from the old door to the new but there seem to be existing threads for those...

Windows are also done, need to tweak the alignment a tiny bit but they work.

Issue 4: To replace the fender, am i correct in thinking i need to remove the wheel first?

When i get back home i will post pics of what ive done so far and when i finish i will create a DIY with pics but so far i dont seem to have done anything right...

you wont need to remove the wheel to replace the fender, just the bolts holding the fender on. there is one right behind the headlight through, you can either removve the front bumper, or squeeze behind the fender well plastic to get to this bolt.

Anyway, door is replaced and aligned...

the fender, which used to look like this...

now looks like this...

Both side windows are replaced. I have to say it turned out well considering the only mechanical things ive done to previous cars are checking the oil and tightening a loose battery terminal...

It just makes me even more enamored with the S because it has made me get up off my butt and take care of this stuff myself. And probably saved a bunch of money in the process.

The only parts i will be getting professional help with are the windshield,

banging out the dent in the passenger fender

and reskinning the passenger quarter panel

and then getting the paint touched up and a repaint on the quarter.

So far, the absolute essentials have been:

Having at least one friend who is a mechanic, or being one yourself.
A metric wrench and ratchet set (an absolute must)
A GPS, for when the 99 is a parking lot and you need to take to the back roads to get rancho cordova, and you're from SoCal...
A vehicle for parts runs, that gets good gas mileage (98 Civic EX Coupe for me, it was a tight fit but thankfully i found the door at one place and the quarter panel and fender at another, cuz all those parts would not have fit all at once)
A douche of a room mate who is so proud of his 328 sedan...and thinks you made a terrible mistake buying an S2K, just for the satisfaction of being able to fix your car for less than it will cost him to get his rain sensing windshield replaced OK, maybe you dont need one of these, they are quite obnoxious...
s2ki.com for the support, and DIYs and being able to check out the mods on the car and realize i didnt overpay
A network of friends and/or family throughout the state, cuz when you get up at 4 AM to drive from SoCal to Sacramento, its nice to know you have a place up North to spend the night.

I have had a great time working on this car but i will be so relieved when im done and can enjoy driving a car that i put back together with (mostly) my own hands

Cheers

There are 2 pins that hold the door to the the mounting hardware. Slide those pins off the mount, attatching the new door and slide the pins back through the new door is the best way. If you've removed any bolts you're in for a headache trying to align the door.

Theres a metal "c" clip that is on the underside of the lock, I usually use a hook blade knife to pull the clip out. Reinstalling is easiest if you put it all back together, put the "clip" back in place, THEN slide the lock though the hole. If you install the lock, then try to get the clip around the lock it will be a nightmare.

Didn't make it to this part before I wrote above. This is what I was talking about. I really can't offer any advice other than to play with it ( loosen, make adjustments, tighten). If the fender is still attached, I'd remove the liner and make adjustments through the the inside of the fender. Focus on making sure the door follows the body line of the fender and quarter panel along with leaving the same gap between the door and fender as the driver side.

Issue 3: once i get the above two solved, i will also be replacing the window and swapping the regulator from the old door to the new but there seem to be existing threads for those...

This is easy, only a few mounting points for this and should be pretty straight forward.

No you wont, you can remove the fender without remove anything else. Be careful not to scratch the head light

Ive managed to fix the parts that i was planning on doing myself (Door and fender), pictures are in the post above yours. While it may not have been necessary to remove the wheel, i did, and it made it a little bit easier, i think Dont know for sure because i didnt try to do it without removing the wheel. Anyway, that side of the car is put back together minus the plastic underfender/wheel well piece since im going to wait till i get it up in the air at my buddies shop to put those back on.
