Default Sanding needed before paint?

Hi fellows,
I have got my brand new q300 dual exhaust with stainless tips. I want to paint it black but leave the tips as is. Question is do I need to sand it befor painting? It's pretty clean and smooth now… (maybe too smooth for paint to stay). if sanding is needed, will sand paper do the job? I have 150 grit 600 grit 1500 and 2000grit sand papers.

Waiting answers online...
Thanks!

Probably just a Scotch Brite pad will be sufficient, I would use a VHT primer before painting to get better adhesion.
