I took mine out and poured some windex in one of the bulb housings, swished it around poured it out until I got all the sand and crap out. I let them sit overnight but wish I couldve let them sit longer because the next day I got some condensation fogging inside from the sun heating them up and nowhere for the evaporation to escape. When I decide to do it properly Ill get some new tail light gaskets and clean out the lights with the windex, get as much out as I can with a blow dryer and let them sit until all the liquid is gone before I install. Should last a long time with the new gaskets. I wouldnt pour anything but soap and water or something that definitely wont damage plastic if it sits for a while.
