tape residue cleanup
hey guys,
so right now, I have no top. No soft top, no hard top, yet
.
Weather here in Dallas, TX was like Florida. Rainy, sunny, rainy, sunny, 'cept it's way hotter
Anyhow, I put some clear polyethylene sheeting over the top and put some painters tape, but the sun melted the sticky part of the tape and the clear top kept blowing away. So I put some clear 3M box tape to hold up, which did great... maybe too great.
I took everything off a week later, the tape got baked
and left yellowish thin film of residue from the 3M box tape and the painters tape.
I've used wd40, goo-gone, which help a little for painter's tape, but no luck on 3M box tape. Knowing acetone is some strong stuff, I tried a little in the edge, which it cleaned off EVERYTHING! even the clearcoat
Any recommendations? will claying and buffing remove this stuff?

Claying is meant to remove contaminants on top of the clear coat. Polishing is meant to take out minor, and shallow, imperfections IN the clear coat.
The post above is going a little bit extreme. Always start with the least aggressive method first. Spend the $20 for claybar. Then spend $100 or so to get a professional to try and polish it. if that doesn't work--wet sanding won't either. The thing is, wet sanding is like polishing on steroids. it will only remove defects that are shallow in the clear coat, not through the clear.
Then consider getting a re-paint.

Also forum sponsor Detailers Domain carries clear-coat safe 3M Adhesive remover. Maybe try and find some locally--or order it for him.

I used Bug and Tar Remover (TurtleWax brand bought from PepBoys) and elbow grease to remove sun-baked tape residue left by a 3M clear bra and by some vinyl tape. Goo Gone had no effect on the residue.
