Weird place for rust
Hey!
I noticed a strange buld of rust in my rear wheel arches. Both sides were infected. When i agressively punched it with a screw driver this came out:
Is this a place anyone seen before?
Grtz.

Rear arch rust is the most common area to rust on this car. And due to the inner/outer skin arrangement it is very difficult to know how widespread it is until someone digs into it, but most times it requires entire quarter panel replacement at a body shop. The quarters are not removable by simply unbolting like the front fenders, so this is not a simple job. It could just be in that one area but is hard to tell. Water gets in between the two skins and thus the rust could be all over the back side of the outer skin. Most times I have seen from pictures it shows up first in the fender lip area and the paint blisters. Hopefully yours is isolated to that one area. Mine has a blister in the fender lip, so I expect when I deal with it the quarter panel will need replacing.

Anywhere in the rear wheel well / arch area can be prone to rust. Looks like you got a bubble there, good thing it is in a relatively harmless area. Take a grinder to it and get all of the brittle rust cut out, grind down to shiny metal. You can also spray it with rust converter, then coat with a primer paint and tremclad rust paint (black). Fill it over with your choice of body filler or gasket sealer, then spray down the entire area with black rubberized rocker guard. Easy fix and it shouldn't spread.
