V1 and hardwire... Takes about 15 minutes.

I prefer the V1 and have it hardwired into the stereo harness with it hanging from the pass visor. Easy install and you can't see it with the top up -- unless you are a midget I guess.

I like the Passport too -- but it lacks the arrows and so far as I am aware the ability to turn on the European band -- which comes in handy.

V1 all the way. There is no substitute for the arrows. It makes finding the thread so much easier.

V1 hands down. Had the Passport and V1 side by side for comparison. Returned the Passport.

I would only consider the V1 or the Passport X50. I have an X50 in my car and I now sware by it. It is really that good .

Can the V1 be hidden anywhere. The reason I ask is because Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia.

You can get the remote display so it does not flash where people and police can see it but the actual unit needs to be where it can see front and back. If it's blocked it doesn't serve it's purpose.

The problem is that you need the detector to "see" out both the front and back of your car. Unless you get a remote mount system, any radar detector will have to be visible to be useful.

Steve c had a suggesion that you clip the V1 onto the passenger's side visor. That may work for you. If not, check into a system like the SR7:

Sorry not to to detract from tread, but I feel pretty dumb for listening to my father-in-law about his Detector. It seems that the V1 or x50 is the way to go. I went out and got a Beltronic 995, however I must say that it has helped me out during my long drives on the 5 from S.F to S.D.

beltronics RX65 is the same internals as the X50 but also has some newer technology that is already flashed in it. the X50 will need to be upgraded if that new radar technology comes to the US.

I have an RX65 and V1. both are nice.

I was looking into permanent installed units but read since they're installed so low in these cars the sensitivity isn't as strong as these types of units.
