What they don't show you in these pictures is the specifics of the mounting posts on the rear side of the grills. The mounting posts don't leave a lot of room for aftermarket tweeters. I had to cut these off in order to get the tweeters for a set of Diamond 661s to fit behind them. I made up a set of mounting boards out of 1/4 pressed wood and used the remaining stub of the mount posts to fasten them in place. The end result does appear stock as you see it from inside the car.
The good news is that a new set isn't all that expensive and I did buy a new set to replace the ones I modified in case I ever decide to try to make the sound system stock again.
the '00 & '05 door panels are not the same, so you should confirm with
someone who has done it that the '05 grills will fit properly. on your
diagram, parts #24 and #28 are the tweeter pods originally added to
the AP1 doors in '02 or '03 which will certainly fit. again, I don't know that
the '05 ones won't fit, only that you need to be cautious as some aspects
of the door panels did change.
I was thinking of something similar but I was going to do a complete swap of the door panel. (BTW, does anyone know if the MY05 door panels can be installed into a MY01?) However if there is not a significant difference in the shape of the door panels between years then this would probably save me some money.
If any one has tried this or something similar I would love to hear any tips. I am sure Silvers808 would also.
This is what I did with an '06 door tweeter. I had a problem with fitting a 2 inch aftermarket tweeter to the OEM grill. So I made a custom bracket and used the 2 collars and 2 screws to hold the bracket. I had to cut the OEM tweeter mounting screws.
