Default 2006 woofer replacement questions

I read the faq and searched but have not found any answers. My sound system is all stock and at higher volumes the passenger side woofer rattles as though it is blown. I hardly ever listen to my stereo and really only want decent sound for cheap price. I am not demanding by any means since I would usually rather listen to my FIPK. I am only looking to replace the blown speaker, not messing with the tweeters, adding an amp, or changing the HU. It seems that coax speakers are cheaper for the 6.5 size needed for the doors. If those are installed in an 06 will the crossover simply filter out all of the highs so that the built in tweeters will not be used? Is it inadvisable to install coax speakers in an 06 for any reason?

Left & Right Woofer and tweeters are designed to go together. If you want to keep the tweeter, why don't you replace your woofer with stock woofer?

i ask the question, why did it blow? it sounds like you are asking for more sound than the factory system can supply, so if having to replace a bad speaker, upgrade! and head unit and door speakers should be the first.

Either replace the woofer with a new OEM woofer (make sure it's bad first though) or install a entry level set of aftermarket component speakers. They are easy to install and will sound better than the OEM speakers, although usually don't have great bass response, but then, the S2000 stock stereo doesn't anyways.

In my previous cars when the factory paper speakers have given up the ghost I have always replaced with aftermarket since the aftermarket speakers are typically worlds better quality for a comparable price. Nice 997 by the way. Just sold a 986 to purchase this car. Will pick up a 997 or GTR in a few years when the wife declares it is time for kids.

To the second poster, it seems to have blown before I bought the car. I bought the car last fall with 30k on the clock. I do max out the volume on noisy top down sections of the interstate but I wouldn't think that the stock HU could cause blown speakers. I am fairly ignorant when it comes to stereo electrics however.

Also, I don't particularly want to buy a new HU as I will also have to buy an interface to enable the redundant controls to continue their functionality and it really isn't worth it to me to spend that kind of money for something that I listen to maybe 5%-10% of the time. Thanks to all for input.

If you are maxing out the volume on the stock HU then you should look at a new HU. The stock HU creates so much distortion at higher volume levels that I'm not even sure how you can stand to listen to it

It won't be the power of the stock HU that will cause damage to the voice coil in the speakers, but the distortion that will.

FWIW, the woofer in the 06 S2K (and other years) aren't paper cones, but check it for damage (if it's torn, you could attempt a repair). Most likely the voice coil is damaged however.

Pointless to replace the speakers if you continue to push the stock HU to it's max, the distortion will just kill the replacement speakers eventually also.

Thanks for the input. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the stock HU even at higher volumes. After reading so many bad things on the forum I found that it didn't sound half bad, especially at reasonable volumes.

The HU isn't too bad...better speakers will actually make you believe the HU is pretty decent. However, a better HU will make a world of difference, especially combined with better speakers.

I thought the same thing at first but when I replaced the HU and speakers, I was blown away by the transformation.

Is the 06 crossover in the door panel trim? If there is a crossover, then it will filter out the highs for sure. I think if you are set on getting after-market for non critical listening, then a sensitive coaxial will do just fine in the door but you'll have to rewire to get the signal to go directly to the coaxial instead of the cross-over. The stock tweeter playing no sound. That'll be the best setup in my mind and will cost about $150 for diy.

Thanks. Congrats on getting the S2k and welcome. Hope you are enjoying the way the S drives.
