Default 3-Way Speakers? How about 42-way?!

42 speakers in one enclosure. 42 digital amps driven by a DSP chip to individually time the sound output to achieve surround sound. People who have heard it at shows have said it's fantastic. Yamaha could be on to something...

Warning; the flash movie on the left is huge (4mb-ish ?) and is worthless. It's just a commercial/teaser with no spoken words or information.

We had a chance to hear it at CES this past weekend. It was very cool.

heh...

my first thought was - it looks like a BOSE.

and we all know the saying, "No highs, no lows, it must be BOSE"

still - i'd be interested in hearing it, but it will NEVER be surround sound when it is only on one side of you.

MSRP is $1499 and the expected release date is March 2005.

Phil, they say the surround is highly dependent on the room the unit is installed in. It works best when you're in a shoebox-shaped room near the back wall (for the rear signals to bounce back to you). I'm a skeptic until I hear it...

i'm sure it is highly dependant upon the room. the thing requires 100% sound reflection to work. and i can promise you, i'll be a skeptic even after hearing it. for $1499 -- that's a bit steep. you can get a baseline AC3/DD/DTS decoder receiver and a set of satellite based speakers for that much... and it should sound much better unless you buy junk.

GSteg -- the outer speakers do look different to me as well. they are probably bass dedicated. my guess would be one is a passive driver.
