Focal Utopia's!! The old one's, dont know about the BE's.

I will let you know about my CDT's once installed. They supposedly can play lower than what my Utopia's where able to do, which was somewhere around 70hz.

specs or no specs on the 165 K2P's... they do produce very substantial bass for an in door 6.5" speaker.

most of us realize that bass out of a 6.5" mid/bass driver is impossible. i suggested the best option i know for output, and he gave no budget... so...

I have often been surprised at the bass from these speakers when i had to remove my 12 inch sub for some reason and ran these speakers with the LPF off. I can definitely recommend these to anyone who's looking to get decent bass without a sub. It's not just about the specs but somehow it seems these speakers do very well in the S, when I had them in my Prelude they did not play as low.

Just my $0.02

These Polk db6500's I put in have a lot of bass for a 6.5" speaker. They're also a direct drop-in speaker for the S2000, no modifications needed to make the speaker or tweeter fit properly.

Phil,
Specs of Focal 165K2P is 70Hz-22kHz and 70Hz is not a lot of "bass" that JawKnee is looking for. I don't know if there is a 6 1/2" component that can produce frequency down to 40Hz or below.

Also, he is looking for a pair of component priced at around $300 or less. Focal 165K2P is way above his price target.

165 KP spec is to 60Hz. Whatever the specs say, the Focal KPs sound great down low to me, but then again, this is all pretty subjective stuff. I picked up a pair for $499.

I had to fashion a "gasket" to fit the speaker in the door.

While we're at it, I wouldn't want to submit a quality speaker to the low quality signal that gets passed out by the stock HU, even with a quality amp.

Bborzell, good point, and you have no way to really adjust the sound, such as EQ, Time Alignment, Cross over and roll off.

The stock headunit stinks big time.

You may be right
Since I had no experience with Focal, I just follow Focal specs to express my opinion and that was not right.

Since he likes to keep stock HU and replace front speakers + amp + LOC, Focal 165 K2P is over-killed for his system.

Hoat -- i wasn't trying to slam you dude... just that those speakers pump WAY lower than they are rated for...

but you are right... they are overkill for a stock HU. i think i was just being pissy over yet another 'what speakers do i buy' thread.

the polks and the infinities are good speakers bang for buck, but neither would i consider big 'bass' speakers.

Phil-

I told JawKnee to post this thread, and instead of asking a generic question about "what speakers", but to include what he is looking to get out of the speakers. (Sorry.) I dont know a whole lot about components (brands and what is good for what.....I just know what I like ). He was thinking about the Infinity Kappa's, but I have heard that Infinity is now known for its bass, more for its crispness and overall balanced high sound.

With that said......I like my Blaupunkts.....they sound good to me, and are a HUGE improvement over the stock crappy speakers.

JawKnee - I guess my biggest piece of advice is to go and listen to several different brands. You should never buy speakers (especially drivers) without first listening, as they all have different niches. If you have this hookup for the JL amp, if its a business, they will probably set up a sound board for you, so you can hear speakers back to back to back. This will REALLY show the differentiation in sound, and will only aid in your decision.

Best of Luck.

John

If you have a modest budget take a look at the Kenwood KFC 605ie. To me the sound was very neutral but still has a pretty good bass punch. I thought they compared sonically to the Infinity. They list for $175, I found them for $80.

Spending about $200 to $300, Polk and Boston Acoustic are also very nice, but if you are going to spend that much what about the Alpines? They look great have a cast aluminum frame, and I understand that they are made by Vifa.

No budget, no expense spared, then maybe top of the line Diamond, Clef, or if there is a dealer is in your area, then the Focals. Focals sold on internet are not warrantied, and might also be counterfeit, so be careful. Then again, no budget right?
