80gb Ipod w. Alpine ida-X305s
I have searched for resolution to the following problem but have not found a solution so I ask the gurus here:
I have a 80gb Ipod that I have in the secret compartment hooked up to a Alpine iDA-x305s unit. The ipod charges perfectly fine when I am driving but if I don't drive for a few days, the ipod battery is completely drained. This gets really annoying as I have to disconnect it and take back in the house to charge via wall outlet.
Its as if the ipod is not shutting down when the car does. It has to be something simple I am missing?
Thoughts?

1. iPods do not shut down just because the headunit is off. Can't blame Alpine, it is just how iPods were designed
2. USB source is suppose to supply and maintain the power whenever the USB cable is connected. But since this is a car, all headunits do not supply power to USB when turned off. What happens then is iPod's internal battery is then outputting power to the connection to maintain volatge, thus draining the battery. Just the way iPods were deigned.
simpler solution is to disconnect the iPod and leave it. When you hop back in, connect again and the ipod should work right away.(if within a week) If power does not maintain, you probably need a new batt in the iPod. Worst case scenario, you can charge the dead iPod for a few minutes and it will work again.

I am sure by researching that you may find another way to charge the iPod when the engine/ignition is off. I am probably like you, I first bought an iPod 2 years ago just to have one to play around with. I then had the Alpine HU and system installed in my S and then moved my iPod connector from the netted area to the console box. I use the iPod on trips and then remove it and store it in the house (for the same reason as you indicated). I learned the same thing that you did, that the iPod will not turn off by itself, and nor will it charge in the Ignition OFF stage. This now gives us the opportunity to expand our ideas and find a way that the iPod can be left on and have the charge remain. Let us know if you find the answer through research.

So for all of those that have the iPod in the hidden compartment, they have to disconnect everytime they exit the car overnight?
That's a stupid design by Apple.

For my CDA-9886 I had to get an adapter cable from Alpine to enable the iPod to properly pause when the ignition was cut or else I'd have the same problem.
it's an interface problem.
my ipod turns on/off just fine on another car with a mp3yourcar.com add on adapter for the stock radio.
the pioneer ipod unit i have doesn't properly shut down my ipod when the car is turned off.

I have an Alpine HU and the Alpine cable that interfaces with the iPod - I can leave the car parked for a week and the iPod is fine, so it should be no different for you. Do you have the Alpine cable or a generic one?
USB cable has to be designed to work with the iPod assignments for pinouts:

No, something is wrong. When an Ipod senses the destination (headphones removed) is off (or if you have it connected with a connector at the bottom to a headunit) the ipod will pause itself. After being on pause for a few minutes, it will turn off. What gen ipod is it?
