Default 9 yrs...and my Alpine headunit is done...

Here's a LINK to the original, however I've also copied the thread here:

So...Monday night of this week, I go to crank the S and nothing...dead battery. I was surprised because I just had a new battery installed in September. I push the car out of the garage and jump start it.

I drive it for around 40 minutes and park it.

I go to crank the S yesterday and damn if it isn't dead again. I repeat the photo...and take it into the Honda dealer so they can check the battery and also get the State Inspection.

The battery test comes back good and they then see there's something pulling a charge from the battery. We can't figure it out and the car stays overnight.

They called me this morning and said with the radio removed, the charge stopped and they think it could be a blown capacitor (??) and time for a new headunit.

Seems like I should get a new headunit considering the age and all. Does anyone else know anything to check for sure? Does this sound about right to you?

I currently have an Alpine CDA-7875 headunit. I like this unit a lot because it offers an angled view (the screen tilts up) and is easier to see with the top down...also it allows for direct control of the iPod without using Alpine's headunit controls...

Any suggestions on a replacement?

Does sending it to you for a fix result in me getting it back?

It would not be hard to test the headunit's current draw with a multimeter,
and get your answer for sure.
I see you have an amp - another possibility is that the headunit is failing
to turn off the amp, another thing to check/test.

I dont think its the headunit. Take the deck out and test the red wire on the harness with the key out to see if there is power going to it.

Calling Alpine's repair center in NY on Monday. I want to get my headunit repaired. Even if it costs as much as a new one...I'd rather keep what I've got. The new ones are not anything close to what I have/like.

For example:

Mine allows for iPod control...not controlling the iPod via the headunit, which is a BIG plus to me!

Mine allows tilt of the screen which is nice in the S2K with the top down.

Before you go through all of this, test the connections for shorts. Make sure the HU/AMP is turning off with the key out. Swap out the HU w/ a borrowed or old unit or pull the fuse on the amp. It beats waiting a week to find out your HU is Bad or just NTF (No Trouble Found).
