install is no different from any other HU
alpine is just generally one of the best makers (unless you go for competition-grade, esoteric brands)
ive owned 2 units... would buy another

I strongly considered the 9857 over the 9856 but decided against it for 4 reasons
1) You can't get it yet
2) It is $150 more
3) I don't think an open top car benefits from most of the advanced features of the 9857
4)Both have Full speed Ipod Connections

I think the 9856 works well enough for the s2000.

The 9857 is still not available yet; I cancelled my order a couple of weeks ago but now Alpine is offering the iPod cable free when you purchase the HU from April 1st to June 30th.

I've read it'll be available the first week of April.

Aside from the display, the advantage of the 9857 over the 9856 is that it is supposed to have the plug for the wired remote control, making it easier to hook up the Modifry DCI with no IR eye sitting in front of the deck.
I talked to Bob Baust and he thinks it should work as is, but will fix the DCI if it doesn't. If the DCI needs to be modified, please be patient as it may take a little time to get it working.

The wired remote aspect is worth 150 to me. Being able to see the display in the sunlight would be an added bonus.

I have used both the wired and the wireless Modifry DCI and really could tell no real difference. The better biolite display and free ipod connector sound pretty good though

The IR DCI for my 9833 works pretty much flawlessly.
