hardwire radar detector
I want to hardwire my radar detector and they sell a hardwire kit on the internet for my specific model, the beltronic vector 995.
there is a nicer hardwire kit that includes a little module that displays the alert, on/off switch, and mute button (30$). On the other hand there is the 'just-wire' kit with no extras, just the wiring harness.
It looks like the power jack into the radar detector is a telephone jack input with 2 pair wire. Would it be possible to buy a phone cord and plug one end into the detector, cut the other end and wire it to a 12V source? Is there anything wrong with my logic here? I guess I have to find out what wire is hot and ground, but other than that, it seems pretty simple to me.
I also noticed the V1 takes this type of power input (telephone jack style).
Thanks,
Mike

Mike-
Pick up the $30 specific one with the mute function.
I have the Passport SR7 with the seperate mute located under my steering wheel.
Its alot easier to reach a couple inches down to mute then to have to look up or reach across the dash. These are not standard telephone jacks that they are using. You will have different pin amounts in different locations.

I have the Beltronics RX 65 and love it.
I passed on the hardwire part since it was so easy to plug it in and run the "phone wire" under the edge of the passenger side of the center console and then up to the unit. I run the unit on the lower third of the windshield and have had no issue picking up a threat.

I am running my unit just right of the rear view mirror at the very top of the windshield. I plug the coil cord in the cig and wap the cord under the e-brake. But I want to hardwire it so i dont have any wires visible.

it actually is a standard telephone jack
i used one to hardwire it into my car.
the only problem i had is that the wire is so thin thats its hard to solder another wire onto it.

well it is a telephone cord for the bell. i just compared and tested the wire
the wire is soo thin that it easily breaks.
the reason why i had to solder is because i have it tapped into my fuse box. i need to crimp a connector on it and the 30 gauge wire is just too thin. i think that i need to repair the conections again as i think it snapped. if you solder it, i recommend you tape it a lot so that it will provide some strength
