9886 vs 9887 vs cda-117 vs ida-305s
just looking for some input on these receivers.
i am SORT OF looking at getting totally away from cd's so the ida-305s would be nice, .........i am saying "s" over the ida-305 because the "s" is the new receiver that is going to beable to broadcast Pandora internet radio with use of the i-phone,....problem is, i dont have an i-phone and dont plan on it until i see what the 4th gen i-phone has to offer. I cant find a side by side comparison on these so its hard to pinpoint the main differences,
i will have to check if modifry has the adapter yet for all of these although its not on my list right away when i get the receiver.
Having USB capability is something i do want thought
plus i keep reading reviews and some people are saying, they dont play all formats of music or charge the i-pod, etc but other people seem to have no problems with that.

The 9887 and 9886 are similar, with different implementations of EQ and Imprint (all of these units support Imprint - the 9887 requires an external tuning box only once to setup, which can be "rented" from crutchfield, the others require an external box all the time, plus the mic/software one time for setup).
The IDA line is built around the ipod - it was developed in conjunction with apple, so it's user interface is about as close to actually using the ipod as you'll find in a HU. Additionally, rather than the analog full speed cable connection, these use a digital usb connection, which is both faster (needed to support album art) and arguably better sounding (the ipod is basically a digital transport, the HU's superior D/A converter is used).
The 117 appears to be an upgraded 9886 utilizing the USB connection of the IDA line. If you want to still play CDs, I'd go with that as the best compromise.
However, I have the first of the IDA line, the X001, and I have never missed carrying CDs. I imported a significant portion of my discs into itunes as apple lossless files, which turns your ipod into essentially a super cd changer the size of a deck of cards (lossless files produce bit-perfect output relative to the source CD). The interface is really great, and I wouldn't go back.
I have the DCI, and don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with the newer versions, but by all means check with Modifry. You have somewhat limited control of the ipod via the dash controls, but no less than you'd have with a cd player.
The only difference between the 305s and the regular 305 is Pandora support, so let your probability of getting an iphone and listening to pandora vs potential close-out pricing on a regular 305 (or even an X100 if you can still find one) guide your decision.
As to your last point, my X001 has played music from, and charged, a 1G Nano, 5G ipod, and iphone 3g. In addition to the lossless files, I have played mp3 and Purchased AAC files as well.
Hope this is useful.

i think i need to read up on this Imprint stuff a little more, i dont think i would actually beable to appreciate it for what it is......its my understanding you need that seperate device to utilize it correct????.....if you set it up once, with say.......soft top up, and then put a hardtop on, or drop top then it wont sound 100% as to what it can ?????
