Default Active Noise Reduction

OK, we've all seen those headphones that have active noice cancellation and make long trips on airplanes bearable. But how about an equivalent technology to reduce the wind noise on long trips with the top down? It _should_ be doable, but I don't think I've ever seen anything. Anyone (MacGyver?) think it is:
A) Possible
B) Practical
C) Exists already

couldn't you just buy the headphones and wear them?

It would be nice to have something like that and TA-DAAA! several groups, like GM, BMW, and some obscure audio research company are trying hard to make it happen. I read about the difficulties and the deal with headphones is they are a confined easy-to-tune-for space. Traditionally you need microphones REALLY close to the ear to pick up the noise waveforms you want to cancel. Not sure how they're getting around that one but I expect mikes on the headrest. The next trick is new audio "beaming" technology that can send a sound on more narrow paths than previously thought possible.

Anyway, headphones are likely to be the only deal for a few more years and the BIG problem is it is illegal to drive with headphones on.

Yes, it's illegal in the state of CA to drive with them on. Even if they're open air AND are actually making it easier for you to hear. Sigh.

There _have_ been some industrial installations of active noise cancellation, so it should be possible -- just not easy.
