Airbag off when wife is in the seat...
Hey gang. Real quick question. When my wife sits in the passenger seat, the airbag "OFF" light comes on. From what I understand, this happens when the seat senses that there is not enough weight for airbag deployment, such as a child. Although my wife is kinda tiny (approx 115-120 lbs), the "OFF" light stays on. I would imagine at that weight, the airbag should be activated. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Thanks!
as an acura service advisor, all acuras have two sensors in the pass seat, one in the lower seat cushion and one in the back cushion. if it does not detect pressure on both sensors the airbag will turn off and not deploy in an accident. it wants to see the passenger is sitting upright so the airbag deploys stright at them for maximum protection. if she is leaning one way or another reducing pressure to the bottom or back seat pressure sensors it causes the light to come on. if she is sitting properly then there might be a passenger seat sensor failure. but if she is just being affectionate with you then there probably is not a problem. hope this helps.

I just wanted to bump this up with a quick update. I made sure she was sitting back in the seat and the Airbag OFF light is still on. Do you think it's time for a stealership visit?
Unless the main SRS light is on there is nothing wrong. Don't waste the dealer's time, they will tell you the same.
The system judged whomever was in the seat wasn't sitting correctly and turned the bag off.If they made the light turn off as soon as you moved in the seat back to a "good" position the light would flash at you every time you leaned more on 1 cheek. Then folks wouild complain that it flashes.
Nothing wrong with your car.

Actually I do think she wants the airbag going off. I'm pretty sure 115 pounds is within the acceptable weight range for an airbag deployment. I think you should have the system inspected by a competent mechanic. I believe there are special warranty terms for some of the mandatory safety equipment. I'd probably check with the dealer, however some dealers have virtually no knowledge of the S2000 and fail to look things up like they should.
The only lifetime warranty is on seat belts, not the SRS system. It is also a limited warranty, you don't get free seat belts after they have been deployed or your dog chewed on them.
You can take your car to a dealer and they will see if there are any codes stored. I can tell you there won't be because the main SRS light is not on. The SRS system does a self check any time the ignition is turned on, and continuously monitors for open or short circuits to bags, buckles and sensors.
The 1st "S" in SRS is for Supplemental, seat belts are primary. The controller judges the weight, seat belt buckle switches, seat position on the drivers side and judges impact severity to deterine if 1 or both bags and if each stage (there are 2) should be inflated.
The dealer can't reprogram the system to work at a different weight. The Seat weight sensors are calibrated correctly because the main SRS light is out.
