Default To all electronic gurus

Ok so heres my predicament. I currently have the pioneer 7900BT:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Pro...DIN/DEH-P7900BT

and i recently bought the pioneer avic s2 GPS:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Pro...ortable/AVIC-S2

I love having a clean look to everything, no wires exposed, nothing looking half assed, and nothing to over the top. I also purchased the modifry bracket for the gps . So heres where my question comes into play.

I wanted to hardwire my gps just so i dont ever have to charge it. I looked online and couldnt find any usb hard wire kits. I then found this device for the HU:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Pro...onents/CD-UB100

i really didnt feel like spending $100 when i could just buy a wire and fuse for $15.

Is there any way I can hardwire the GPS as is, or do I have to buy that additional device? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

To hardwire the power to the unit just cut the power harness and wire that right into the car. This should be hardwired to the spare slots on the fuse block so that it is properly wire and fused protected.(see the FAQ for the location of those slots that are available in the fuse block) If you want to link the GPS to the HU you will need to pick up the CD-UB100 to properly hardwire and connect them together.

Sweet, so all i need is the USB cable that they gave me with the GPS, splice it and hook it up. I already hard wired my radar detector so as long as its the same procedure ill be fine... the only difference is that i had a fuse inline with my radar detector... is this just for added safety?

The GPS should have a power cord that might look like a mini USB on one end and a 12v power plug on the other. You need to cut the cigarette lighter side of that cord.

John (darkknight) generally knows what he's talking about so I hate to
jump in here, especially as I don't know, but it sure looks like that massive
lighter plug might have a transformer built in.

USB standard is 5VDC - any cord such as the one shown will be a step-down xformer (12VDC to 5VDC). You will need to get a 12V cigarette lighter socket like this:

Wire that into your power/GND as mentioned and then plug your GPS power cord into it.

Should be able to find a wired type socket at most any auto parts store.
