Default Almost Constant Lidar Readings

I borrowed my friends cheap Radar/laser detector to go on a trip, and the Laser Detector was going off almost the entire time I had it plugged in. I turned the sound off eventually because it got too annoying. I figured his detector was broken, but today i went out and bought a Cobra 9990 and the same thing is happening. Is something in the s2k causing it to go off? Or have I somehow gotten hold of 2 faulty detectors?

Edit: I called cobra and they said that it was most likely something in the vehicle causing the false readings. Any ideas as to what could cause this? Only thing i have installed are new HU and speakers. If i cant find the problem can anyone suggest a similarly priced detector that doesn't go off in their s2k, or can have the laser detector turned off?

Faulty detector IMO, I have an Escort 8500 X50 and they're know to fail gradually over time. When it was new it worked as advertised and was great. After using it for a year I started getting more and more false LIDAR signals. ESPECIALLY if I turned a particular corner hard and floored it. I thought it was a speed trap but there was no cops there ever. I had to turn the LIDAR warning off because it was getting really freaking annoying.

Sunlight at a certain angle causes my Beltronics 940 to indicate Laser.

the escort is a fault from a power surge that is very minuscule. i notice that when i have the lights half on (parking lights on) and i get on the throttle it lights up. really annoying

Sounds like you need to send it "clean" power. Hmmmm... looks like I need to consult an EE.

Just returned the unit to radioshack, and picked up a beltronics 995i (i believe) instead. No problems so far. The other two units were cobras, maybe Cobra has bad Lidar Detectors.

I have a V1. Some of the new Audi cars seem to have something in them that causes it to blow up. At one point all directions were flashing and it was showing 9 k bands.

I know that the HID lights on the s2k (and others) will sometimes cause the laser signal to go off...even when I turn them on in the garage. Infiniti and Lexus have something in them too that causes the laser, and there is a GMC SUV (can't remember which one) that has something in the taillights that makes it go off too.

Certainly possible. Though nothing in the S sets off my V1.

Cobra has bad detectors period. The typical Cobra install (pointing skyward, etc) makes matters worse.

Sources of laser falses for the V1 are covered pretty well in the manual.

Laser detection is mostly pointless anyway. If you're getting constant falses and can't deal with the cause I'd suggest just disabling laser detection if it's possible on the detector. I've had a few saves from laser scatter on my V1 but it's not anything you can count on. More often that not, it's detecting red neon, an Infiniti with laser cruise control, certain GM brake lights, etc. If you want laser protection then get a jammer (or whatever euphemism they're trying to use for them these days).
