Alpine 9851 and Modifry Wired CDI

Alpine 9851 and Modifry Wired CDI
I broke down and after deliberating a great deal I purchased and installed an Alpine 9851 and the Modifry Wired DCI. What a great match! 
The Alpine just oozes quality compared to the Pioneer, Kenwood and JVC that I checked out. Not too flashing and the sound is quite good. I installed the Alpine today and love it.
Does anyone know exactly what BBE does? I notice a fuller sound, kind of like a loudness switch but without the lows. There are three levels, which the manual shows you how to set it up. But it does not explain it in any kind of detail.
