Exactly, I guess everyone's question is compatibility. I think you NEED to have Ai-Net and you NEED to have the scroll functions. I have a late last year model I believe with those functions but I'm unable to tell if it will work for sure or not?

Any thoughts on whether or not the ipod interface will be able to play audible.com files. The ipod is "audible enabled", but from some of the stuff I have read the Alpine interface may only be using the ipod for data sorage, and the interface or headunit may be doing the acutal file decoding. In that case, the Alpine equipment would have to deal with the audible.com file decoding. Any ideas?

Refurbished ipod 30gb for $369. Expires today. $389 is the normal price from the looks of it:

Target.com: 15% off, includes iPods
Target.com slashes 15% off a purchase with no minimum via coupon code "TCSAVEJULY55", as a reader notes. This offer includes iPods. (To find them, search for "ipod" plus the size.) After the discount, the iPod 15GB costs $254.99, the iPod 20GB costs $339.99, and the iPod 40GB costs $424.99. Shipping is free, although sales tax is added where applicable. No end date is listed.
Get it while the getting's good.

Apple usually does not allow these kinds of discounts: check any Best Buy or CompUSA ad to see.

The iPod dock connector has all the necessary lines to control the unit, including reading the ID3 info off of the MP3 files. It is also certainly possible to read the MP3 off of the iPod and have the Apline decode it... but if that were the case, I'd doubt the iPod adaptor would cost a measly hundred bucks.

More photos (click for larger versions):

I take back what I said about audio-out. The iPod displays "OK to disconnect" whenever it severs a data connection (such as to a PC). So it probably transfers the MP3s over to the headunit (or iPod interface) for decoding.
