Default amp gain question

Hi-

Pardon my ignorance, but I know nothing about audio stuff.

Anyway, I had my audio equipment installed by a shop.

I was looking at my amp(which is an Eclipse) and gain settings but have no idea what they mean. On the gain I see a setting of 0.2V, 0.5V and 5V. I just wanted to know what these numbers mean and what setting would be good to use. I've noticed the closer I get to 5V, the louder the system is. Is turning it to 5V too much?

TIA.

his whole site is great -- i highly recommend it for a lot of good answers to common questions.

i just wish i could meet this guy. i know he lives here in my city (which isn't that big)... i'd been using his site for quite a while before i figured out his physical location...
