I just realized I might not be able to get the new kenwoods because they open up and kind off of fold downwards. We have a really small area for the stock unit and I think the Kenwood head unit won'tbe able to open up.
Kenwood has a brand new line out that looks like this:
If that's what you're talking about, you'll be fine as this new model doesn't have the MASK like the old models. The only time the face rolls down is when you're loading or ejecting a CD.
However, I tend to believe you're talking about this series:
Honestly, I've had that exact stereo in the S, and it does work, kinda. You have to have the radio door open any time the stereo is on and whenever you're turning the car on or off so the stereo can open/close. As a big fan of Kenwood HU's, I'd have to say that someone was crazy when they designed this stereo. I liked it at first when I saw it in the store, but I got rid of it in a hurry once I got it in my car. The menus are annoying to deal with and I couldn't stand having the radio door open all the time. Just a word of warning...
If I were you, and you want Kenwood, I'd go with the new models like the first picture. Just my $.02!
Yes, the unit must always be "opened" as it is in the picture, unless it is completely powerd down. There are several angles that you can set that part to and only one of the angles will actually hit the bottom of the radio door, so you'll be fine there.
Again, the choice is obviously yours , but I'd definitely recommend the top style over the bottom one. I'm a HUGE Kenwood HU fan, but this is not a very good series IMHO. However, to each their own, I'd just suggest going to the store and playing around with the menus to see if it's something you want to deal with. They really are confusing to navigate...
I have had HORRID luck with my Kenwoods. the faceplates broke 4 times on my Excelon and ended up dumping it on ebay the 4th time it came back from warranty service... they offered me "trade in" credit for a new headunit... at full retail. gee thanks.
hmmm... I have this old guy in my car now and it still works like a charm. Occasionally, I even forget to leave the radio door open when I'm getting in and out of the car and it gets jammed up on the door. Doesn't seem to bother it though. It's yet to slow down or stall at opening/closing...
any new info? im going to be stuck getting a kenwood apparently (because of the keg) and im looking into a HU with the MASK sysetm as it seems all of kenwood's high end systems use MASK now.
anyone hear any reliability problems?? i dont have a problem with leaving the radio door open whenever its on.
Check on Crutchfield.com to see what fits the S2K. There are a few Kenwoods listed. I was considering one and then decided to go with the Clarion. It was a tough one between the Clarion and Alpine. I wish I had the Alpine, but the Clarion has a few additional features. They seem to be the two best choices for the S2K.
Some of the Kenwood's are nice. You can see what fits and make a decision based on price, features, etc.
I've had the both Kenwoods on this thread as well as this one I have now:
Technically, they'll all work. The new one (like above) does not have the MASK system. It only rolls open when you're changing CD's.
The older one I offered to sell you in the other thread has the MASK system. So, when you start the car and shut the car down, you have to have the radio door open or it'll hit the door. Once it's on or off, you can close the door with no problems.
The one on the top of this thread will aslo work; however, the radio door MUST be open whenever you're listening to music. It will not fold up and keep playing music. So, I'd definitely advise AGAINST this style. If you want the one I have available, it is a Kenwood Excelon head unit with 4.5 Volt pre-outs and it is keg compatible. It's just sitting around, so feel free to make a reasonable offer!
