AP1 headlight wiring harness problem
Hello electronics gurus (of which i am definitely not!)...
a couple weeks ago, on my way to a local s2ki meet, my tire chewed through half of my driver side wiring harness. this is on a MY2002 AP1.
the night before, i had swapped someone with EDM headlights, and apparently some of the wires ended up having alittle more slack in them than before. Since i dont have fender liners in my car, the tire ended up chewing threw half of the wires.
the damage:
- the red/positive wire for the city light (the small, itty bitty light bulb under the turn signals) was completely cut
- a few (3 of the black ground wires) were frayed
the resulting symptoms:
- headlights still work, but while i was driving when this happened, my high beams turned on and my interior lights turned off (as in the console lighting became bright, as if my headlights werent on)
- my taillights don't come on. the brake lights, however, work fine.
to sum it up, my car pretty much acts as if the headlights are not turned on, even if they are (so the tail lights dont come on, interior lights remain bright, nothing else inside lights up -- ie. AC lights, audio control lights)
-------------------------
i worked on the problem last night, thinking it was just gonna be simple; just connect all the wires back, solder in new wires for the cut/frayed wires and call it a night.
so i did that, i bought some 14gauge wire (hindsight realizing that this wire is way too thick) and soldered it in to replace the frayed and severed wiring.
no change.
so thinking it was a problem with using a wire too thick, i cut and stripped the bare wires themselves and connected them to each other...
no change.
also, since i have LED bulbs all around for the turn signals (and city light), i thought this would be a good time (since im cutting/splicing wires anyway) to add some resistors to fix the schizophrenic flashing... i soldered in 8 ohm resistors to each positive line for the turn signals (all 4) and there was no change.
so, there you have it, i have 2 issues i need solved (headlight wiring thingamajiggy and LED hyperflashing...), think you guys can help?
btw, no other electrical mods, just those LED bulbs and EDM headlights. and if it matters, im not running any sidemarkers so there's no bulb in that socket? i checked my manual and it seems those are on the same relay with the turn signals...

Just brainstorming but here it goes
- Try checking the fuses (witch I'm sure you already have)
- Try checking load on the switch to see if theres a short some where (whitch would explain why it thinks it's always on)
- Check current at the tail lights when switched on
... that's all I got at the moment.

hi new to the forum,
i was wondering if the op resolved the problem? I am in the same situation.... When my headlights are on my taillight, license plate light, interior night light and cluster night light wont turn on.
