Aux 12v power wire - under the dash
I need a 12v power wire to hook a radar power wire to on a 2005. I don't have a electrical schematic. Does anyone know which would be good wires to choose from? I'm looking in the driver's side footwell.
there is no need to cut or splice any wires. there is an open spot on a panel underneath the drivers side dash on the left. the FAQ in the electronics forum shows the location. also, moving this to the electronics forum.
Get a 12V circuit tester, one end has a sharp needle probe and a mini light bulb, the other has an alligator clamp attached via a wire to the light bulb.
Pick a good ground source (like a dash support bolt) clamp on the alligator clip. Then turn the ignition to "run" (don't start the engine). Take the needle tip of the probe and gently pierce a selected wire through the insulation(careful not to ground out the needle), when the bulb lights up, you have your wire. If you are careful , the hole you make in the wire insulation will 'self-heal' incase you guessed wrong.
Check with the key off to make sure you're hot in the 'run' key position only, and you're done.
Current tap the wire for your power lead.
Regards,
BD
PS With some types of OEM wires that have a extra tough insulation, you can twist the needle probe back and forth to "drill" through the insulation skin.

pgarratt,
Be sure to confirm the polarity of the wiring you are using to power the radar detector. I reversed the wires when I was hardwiring mine a couple of weeks ago and fried the detector.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the instructions I followed on here. It was own ignorance. I had a striped wire and a plain wire and assumed the striped wire was (+). Turns out it was the negative lead.
Just check your wiring. Using the fuse box tap is the way to go.
