Default Battery Died.....

Hey Guys-

I installed my second amp today (Infinity 7520a) for the S-pods. I also installed a 1-farad Rockford Fosgatte Cap (as I already have a Hifonics Titan 8800 installed). After everything was installed, I turned the motor on (no engine, no alternator) and let it run while I buttoned everything back up. Not 20 minutes later, my Alpine 7995 stopped playing, flashes a few times, then shuts off. The lights inside the car start flickering as well. I jump in the car to attempt to start to get the alternator running....no dice. Turns over 3 times then dies.

Luckily I have a jump cell in the garage. I use it to get the engine started. Everything seems normal. When the engine is running, the digital readout on the cap registers 14.2V. When I turn the car off, the digital readout on the cap drops to around 13.0, and after about 5-10 minutes, shuts off.

I am wondering if the 20 minutes I had the motor running was enough time to kill the battery....seems awefully fast. I just re-started the car with about 30 mintues of "off: time, and it started up first time.......

Interesting to say the least.....

John

Do you have a stock battery? and is it the original one that came with the car?

Nope, replaced a few months back with a Silverstar from Autozone. I will eventually get a Yellow Top, but that is down on the priorities now....unless its needed.

I have a trickle charger at my parent's house that i might hook it up to over a weekend.

It sucks because my Cousin's SUV has a Yellow Top installed that is mine for the taking, but it will not fit in the S2000 bracket!

John- Did you get my PM about the alarm?

Mine died last weekend... luckily Wal-Mart is 1.5 miles down the road. Batteries are not light when you're lugging them 1.5 miles in the Florida sun Under $50, 2-year no questions asked warranty, pro-rated after that for another 4 years.

I think mine is 3 years no questions, then prorated....I am just confused as to what caused this. Car starts right up now...we will see what happens in the morning. I brought the jump cell home with me just in case it needs a little nudge in the morning to get going .

Mac - That link in your sig to Michelle is still not up...... it that going to be updated? I am looking into getting some neon LED's in the footwells, similar to yours, but need the wiring diagrams.

Thanks

John

WTF are you powering with all that ampage?

30 minutes of running your system with those amps, with no motor running, will definetely kill a battery in short order.

Just trickle charge it overnight, and see if you get another problem. My stockie was never the same after it died one day, so I replaced it. I have no issues with my yellow top, but my RSX friend's is gone...after about 8 months. According to out tester, a cell is corrupt. Im not certain I can recommend then anymore after all these failiures.

I am most likely going with this one next...see if its any good...Ive heard good things, so well see.....950 CAs, (200 more than Optima)

oh yeah.... i can kill a stock battery in 10 minutes flat. (all those inefficient class AB amps. )

and yeah, it's never going to come back to full. once you deep cycle a non-deep cycle battery, the fat lady is already humming to herself and doing scales to warm up.

and Dave's report of another YellowTop failure has me troubled... between mine, various reports around the net, and others here...

Dave, do they make that battery in a size that fits our Type 51R configuration?

otherwise, just go get a Die Hard.

Yup...that battery has center terminals, meaning it can be mounted any way. In the s2000, we can use the D51 or the D51R, since we have slack on our wires, but cars like the RSX cant. These are great since they are in the middle, you can mount it anyway to want. Not only that, you can mount it on its side, and have terminals there too (dual post)

Lightning Audio's Storm Extreme Duty Battery is made by Exide, isn't YellowTop made by the same company ? Also, the size of this battery is much larger.

Type 51: L 9.4
