Would it be worth putting the oem speakers in the rear and fitting a 6in sub in the door? I'm not after punch just more bass range.

Rear speakers are great to "augment" the mains in the doors. It fills that empty sound "space" quite nicely BUT if you're to depend on the rears as your sole speakers, I don't think this would work so good. If you think you need or want a sub, you're better off adding an amp and put the sub under the seat or up under the passenger footwell. The better way to go would be to get a proper sized sub and put it in the trunk.

xviper, i will probably follow your foot step and put the stock as the rear speaker.

it would be great if there are some measurements in numbers of where to cut/drill!

Now I wish I had bookmarked that thread. It gave every minute details about the whole thing.
OK, here's a recap.
Look at my 3rd pic above. Notice the right edge where the speaker panel lines up with the side panel (the one you don't remove)? Now remove the stock "speaker" panel. Take a wide strip of masking or duct tape and draw a straight line along its length down the middle of the tape. With the stock panel off, stick the tape horizontally along the carpetted vertical section just below where the lower edge of the stock panel would fit. Now you have two reference edges.
Take your speaker and do a test fitting. Just lay the speaker in the empty space between all the metal braces. Take two measurements from the exact center of the speaker. First one is to the side edge. Second one is down to the line you drew on the tape. Write these down.
Now snap the panel back on. Measure back out from the side and from the line. You now have the exact center of your hole.
Measure the minimum diameter of the speaker that will allow it to mount flush on the panel. Divide by 2 and you now have the radius of your circle that you can draw with a compass. Draw your circle and cut with a jigsaw. The rest, I think you can use your imagination, right?
Repeat for the other side.

PS. You should really consider getting Lucid's rear speaker wiring harness, the one that allows the mute button to mute all speakers. If you aren't very good at soldering tiny little pins in the back of the HU, you will either be pulling your hair out trying the do it or the stupid thing will break one or more of the solders in time due to the car's vibration and you'll end up taking the HU out again. PLUS, just soldering the speaker wire leads will NOT mute them when you want to as these second output leads are not connected to the mute button.

I'm only 5'8" so my inseem is not so long that I need to have the seat all the way back. There is about a 2-3" space behind my seat. The passenger seat, however, I've got pushed back as far as it will go without actually touching the speaker cover. It still works quite well.

since i got a little study break

i looked at the Kenwood KFC-P403 4\" Component System

i think the value of the stock speakers as the rear speakers can't be beaten (cause they are FREE! )

but how about these as rear speakers?
