Post Best GPS

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a really good GPS for the s2k. I'd like to keep it the cost around $450 - $550 after tax. I'm going to use it for a trip up to Deals Gap and Nanthala at the first of November

I've heard good things about Garmin (I used to own an IQUE which rocked), and I have been doing some online shopping in regards to the models and brands available. A lot of positive reports are in for the Garmin units, but online reports (could be influenced by the manufacturer etc..) may not reflect the actual performance of the equipment on the street.

I guess my central question boils down to this: What GPS do you all use and what are your opinions of them? Another side question: Has anyone here hard-wired a power cord from source to a remote location in the cockpit for the GPS, if so, any suggestions?

Apologies if this has been duplicated elsewhere, I'm just now getting used to the forum.

Thank you for the help

i have a garmin streetpilot 2820...and i love it...

its not the smallest unit out there. if size is an issue, try the garmin nuvi series. i like my 2820 because it has xm radio and traffic capabilities. honestly, i use the radio functions more than the gps. i have the unit hardwired to my headunit...

can't comment on other brands of gps's...however, i will say that my gps has become almost indispensable. i've taken long road trips to places i've never been before, intentionally not bringing maps or mapquesting ahead of time. the gps has worked very well for me..

hope this helps

Just purchased the Garmin Nuvi 650. I admit, it's more than your budget, but I love it because of the larger 4.3 inch screen. Any of the Nuvi 600 series are great, as well as the 200W and 250W (which also have the larger screen.

I just purchased Modifry's dash bracket so that it won't be stuck obnoxiously on the windshield.

Hi Shamoo, thanks for the thoughts:

I've been looking at the 650-660 too.. very very nice

I'd like to see about the windshield bracket as well, I think a power cord from the cigarette lighter might be in order also.

Have you purchased the external automobile antenna as well? thoughts on it?

Here is what I purchased from Modifry.

That way, it'll look like this: (Pictured is the 300 series)

I still have to get it hardwired to somewhere inside the bezel once I get home from work. That way, I don't have to run a cable from the unit toward my arm to the cigarette lighter by my elbow.

I did not need to purchase an external antenna. The built in one is sufficient enough. I haven't found a place where it couldn't find a satellite.

I think it's the best looking mount other than custom fabricating a dash cutout with an Alpine/Pioneer/etc navigation/DVD/CD player unit.

Pioneer AVIC-S2 is the best GPS I used for so much feature. It's the best looking piano black GPS and with nice graphics. I got a few brand new Pioneer AVIC-S2 for sale for $250.

Mio A701, or the recently announced A702. It's a phone, a PDA, a GPS, mp3 player...you name it.
