Best, or should I say loudest, subs?
How big of subs can I fit into the trunk of an S2k with it sounding decent? The JL stealthbox looks good, but its so weak and I think, overpriced for such a weak little unit. Any suggesions, ideas, comments? Thanks.
you've asked two different questions - the loudest subs (and IMO the best) on the market right now are the JL W7's... that said, it's hard to do them in our trunk, cause they want a big box and the stealthbox won't get it done. the stealthbox isn't weak at all, but if you're looking to set SPL levels, a. this isn't the car, and b. it isn't the box. a quality JL W6 in a sturdy box that any quality installer (i recommend my tweeter boys) can build for you will most likely make you happy.
best subs on the market:
JL W7 (IMHO overpriced)
Image Dynamics IDmax (needs at least 1.5 cubes)
Resonant Engineering XXX (also needs a big box)
Adire Audio Brahma
Audiomobile EVO-R
I don't think many people will argue that these are the best drivers on the market. My experience has been that all of these are so good that other factors will determine which one you want, not the quality. The W7 is probably the coolest looking so if you were to do some sort of insstall where the sub is visible i would say this is a good choice. However, if you want to have any trunk space in an S2000, i think the JL, IDMAX, and XXX are not going to be an option. So, that leaves the Brahma and the EVO-R. I chose the EVO-R because it's $100 cheaper (currently on sale for 269 for the 12"), i think it looks better, and it is not as deep. Also they are in stock and the Brahmas are backordered. One caveat is that all of these subs need a lot of power. They will all be wasted with anything less than 500 watts RMS and will sound best with ~1000.

I think it would be safe to say that the Image Dynamics IDQ subs will hang with the EVO-R's and require less than half the power. They aren't as pretty, but it is hard to listen with your eyes...especially with the trunk closed.

by the way, all of these subs are really high SQL subs, meaning they will get very loud (SPL) and still retain excellent sound quality (SQ). I'm assuming that's what you're looking for as i don't think anyone in their right mind would want to make an S2000 into a total SPL car.
but the W7 is not the only JL sub out there - the W6V2 is a great choice which offers more 'rock bass' rather than 'rap bass' and needs a lot less room, and costs less as well. something to ponder.
Cadence, Kove, Polk/Momo and GS Redline are very good too.
Good enclosures like mine
are a needed mated a compatible driver. Power has to be strong too. A/B amps IMO don't cut it for serious bass, the Class D is the way to go (it's easy to overdrive a driver with these so be careful when tuning). AND actually too much "loudness" isn't a good thing 1000 watts to a 12" is more than enough, 2000 watts+ is painful
