Blew a speaker... what to replace it with?
When I got my S about two years ago I had the audio system replaced. I got a JVC headunit, amplifier (75W RMS x 2) , and Focal component speaker system for the front. The sound is overall a bit "tinny", but the system worked well.
...Until recently. I started hearing a rattling coming from the lower left speaker. It got louder and louder until now I can no longer even listen to it. The speaker has blown out and I will need to replace it.
So... my questions.
- Can I replace just the blown speaker, or will I need to replace the entire set?
- Since the system I bought was a component system, I'm guessing the lower speaker is a woofer only (?).
- What size is the lower speaker?
- What would you recommend that I replace the blown speaker with?
I'm not an audiophile and don't really care about getting the highest fidelity possible, though I would like for the system to sound good. The main thing is that the speaker needs to be able to handle the power I'm putting to it. Apparently the 75W RMS was a little too much for the woofer and after two years it gave up the ghost.
Any advice?

Since you find the speakers to be 'tinny' I would suggest getting a speaker that is better suited to your liking. If you find the Focals 'tinny' I would suggest you look into Alpine Type-R's. Its a solid speaker setup for a good price. They are warmer speaker.
My comments and suggestions are based on the assumption that you tried to adjust the treble and bass to make the sound better and more to your liking. However if you have Alpine's are a great choice.

The door speaker size is 6.5" and I also suggest the new Alpine Type R (SPR-60C). You can spend more and get better, but these are a good value. Also, the reason your speaker blew might not be too much power from the amp. It could be too little. Blowing speakers with pure power is not that easy and probably unlikely from 75W RMS. Distortion, especially around levels a speaker is designed to handle at peak, is what kills. Thats why you don't really want to match up the amp power and speaker handling power. Its better to have the amp deliver cleanly with ease at the speaker's rated max than have them both stressed out at around the same power.
