Yes, that is Xmax....where do we differ here?Look the voice coils below, the actual coil does not go all the way....

Once Xmax is exceeded, you don't know by how much you have exceeded it. You could be pushing the voice coil beyond the magnetic field of the magnet...you now have no control over it.

Actually, I'm the one that is wrong, you just agreed with me. Xmax is really supposed to be defined as the maximum linear one-way excursion, with the implication that it can be achieved without damage to the speaker. Some mfr's cheat and post the 2-way excursion and don't tell you. Just like they cheat and list efficiency at 2.83 volts instead of 1 watt. While that is good to know, it makes direct comparisons harder.

I just caught this:

Modifry, what is your point here? You asked as simple question, I gave another example of how a speaker can be damaged.
Xmax defines the maximum distance that the cone can travel without damaging the speaker. We have both agreed to this. It is linear and yes, manufacturers cheat (sometimes) by giving you peak to peak values - but if it is, it is always indicated as being peak to peak, anyone who knows speaker speak will half it. Are you saying that I do not understand what Xmax is simply because I did not mention that it was a linear measurement? Should I also state that it is given in inches or in cm, with cms giving the illusion of having a longer throw because it has a great value?
You are correct about the formers. Once you push it beyond the magnetic field what is going to control it when it comes back down? You have also agreed with me...
may being the operative word. This was basically was my first post to this thread...

but that additional excursion may not cause physical damage, depending on the driver's construction.

You all knew this was coming
Top 10 Ways to destroy a speaker (some previously stated but so classic they had to make the list):
- Throw it from a tall building
- Toss in front of a speeding train
- Poke a screwdriver through the surround or cone
- Play John Tesh, Michael Bolton or Barry Manilow for extended periods of time (thanks Mac and others)
- Apply so much power that the thermal limit of the driver is exceeded (thanks modifry)
- Connect to an extension cord and plug into 120VAC (thanks for the pics PJK3)
- Forget that you left the subwoofer sitting on the ground behind the car
- Fasten mounting screws with hammer
- Rinse dust from your speakers with water prior to installation
- And the #1 way to detroy your speakers - Have your system installed by a "self-proclaimed expert"
