Default Boston Acoustics Pro Series - tweeter problem

Hi guys

I've got the BA 6.5 Pro Series component speakers in my car and I've had a tweeter problem for some time - essentially the tweeter will intermittently work. This seems particularly evident at low volumes and sometimes turning it up will bring it back to life. I've not eliminated the cross over as the issue as yet and I can do so, if you think it a possibility. However, it can be hard to replicate the problem.

I've emailed BA and they refer to the Neo 5T tweeter as a replacement but it could be expensive.

The Pro Series spec refers to 3 ohms (is that simply the mid range speakers and not the tweeters?) but the Neo 5T tweeters appear to be 8 ohms.

I've noticed some Infinity Perfect T tweeters going for a very reasonable price on ebay here in the UK. However, they are 4 ohms.

Because of the crossover can I mix my ohms without damage?

Right, I've swopped the tweeters and it appears that it is the cross over which is the issue - I guess using a different manufacturer's cross over is less of an issue than using different tweeters?

First, I am assuming that all your connections are solid? Swapping the speakers does not necessarily mean that its the x-over. Chances are that it is, as that is the splitting point of the signal, and the woofer is still working fine, but it could still be in the wiring between the x-over and the tweeter.

Yes, I've checked the connections and made sure there's no short. I've also swopped the amp speaker outputs to make sure its not an amp/HU problem.

if it is the crossover, ebay is a good place to look, such as:

BA has had more than one Pro series crossover. Make sure you buy the exact same one you're replacing, otherwise your left channel will not sound the same as your right.
