Default Building a custom digital clock

I am in need of a custom clock for the S. I was looking around and found this website:

http://www.iguanalabs.com/mbklcd.htm
http://www.iguanalabs.com/mbkit.htm

They have basic kits that will teach the fundamentals of electronics and microprocessor programming. With this and a custom LCD display such as this one: http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/1602b...#CFAH1602BTMCJP

Is it possible to build myself a clock with the date? Expensive? I know, but I wish to learn in the process. The LCD Module is a 16-pin display similar to the one in the kit. After I get good maybe I can add temperature to the display as well.

EJ's help!

Well. Microcontroller projects are fun. Personally I think the display you have chosen might be a little bit overkill.

I would go for something along the lines of http://chaokhun.kmitl.ac.th/~kswichit/Ajay/clock.html

Have fun!

My entire car is overkill. Anyone know if that screen will work with those microprocessor products?

Goodluck with the digi clock!

Read the datasheets. The one for the display was quite informative.
2051 is not a uC I am familliar with and I am more lazy than curious today, so...

Besides, you should read those datasheets anyway -- if you understand them you know you have a reasonable chance of completing this project.

Haha quite true but I have yet to purchase the beginner's kit to start learning about all of this. I just need to know if it can be done with the products mentioned so I can buy it and start learning!

I do have an aftermarket unit. However, its still annoying to switch between song info and time. In addition, I need a filler for my dash cutting project and this is the perfect size.

Well. A quick look then...

Assuming we are talking about the AT89C2051 uC (www.atmel.com/atmel/acrobat/doc0368.pdf) a quick look would indicate that it has an I/O port that *should* be possible to use for communication with the display. However, while it does have timers I cannot see an RTC on the block diagram (nor mentioned in the text). I think you would want that for your app, and since many uC's do have one choosing another might be a good idea.

I have no recomendation (been away from HW design for a while and things develop so very fast...) Google is your friend, however.
