Can a usb cable be hardwired into power/ground?
I am making a flush iPhone dock/charging station in my armrest. I bought a car charger but the plug has releases on each side where it connects to the iPhone. This won't work as that will all be covered by the armrest and I won't have access to it. The cable I use to plug it into the computer does not have the side release buttons so would work perfectly fine. Can I chop this cable to hardwire into power/ground in my car? or since it has a usb plug will it be different? I wouldn't think I should have any issues but want to double check before I chop it up.
I want to do exactly this, except I want to have the audio out cables as well, like so:
/-----[USB Power]
[iPhone] [Dock Connector]--------<
\----[3.5mm audio out (or RCA)]---[Headunit AUX in (preferably in the rear of the unit)]
/-----[USB Power]
[iPhone] [Dock Connector]--------<
\----[3.5mm audio out (or RCA)]---[Headunit AUX in (preferably in the rear of the unit)]
I think I am just going to buy the ipod adapter for the Eclipse head unit. Would be nice to wire it that was so I can use my head unit for the iphone and thus the dash controls should work I think.

^Just bought the ipod adapter for my eclipse head unit. Shipping says it should be 2-3 days and should ship tomorrow so should have it shortly for the install. I'll let you know when it comes in to set up a time to stop by. Thanks a lot.
Neutered, thanks for the very detailed reply, but I'm sorry your information is just not true. (Or I am completely misunderstanding you)
I used the Kensington Liquid Aux product in my old car to accomplish this. It not only was stereo out, but it sounded better than the headphone jack.
Frankly, I don't want to be screwing around with my headunit to play music off the iPhone. Ideally, the radio door should stay closed most of the time.
