Default Can't hear music with the top down!

I need to upgrade the stereo in the s2000. I just can't take the crap that comes out of the speakers when driving fast with the top down. I would consider myself a low-level audiophile, but I am not looking for quality sound in this car because I think it would be a waste of money in this car.

Right now, I have laying around the house, sony ES cdx860, Boston Acoustics pro 5.25s, and two amps (alpine 25x2, and something I can't think of right now 175x2). But I don't really want to use that stuff because I don't want to lose the dash controls and the cd changer. So I'm interested in upgrading the door speakers and maybe adding an amp to go along with the stock head unit. I would love to use my speakers that I have right now, but I don't want to hack at the doors. It is tempting though, as those speakers with the 175x2 amp sounds very nice.

So any reccomendations anyone on a drop in speaker that may work with my alpine V12 amp? And how do you install an amp without RCAs inputs on the head unit? I have never done an install without RCAs. Thanks.

  • PAC has an IR module that will let you keep the dash controls. (I have one lying around, if you want it for cheap. It has the S2K harness already attached. You would need to wire your Sony harness on the end of the leads.)
  • S2Kman, on this board, made a module that will hardwire the dash controls; mimicking the Sony remote controllers.
  • You would need line converters to go from speaker out to RCA in.

You will have better luck getting one of the new Sony stereos that are compatible with S2kman's setup. It is really slick. You also get RCA outs.

The 25x2 isn't going to be enough power to drive speakers. You will need to upgrade that amp. The new Sony headunits are 50x4 peak. It was borderline for my Polk Components.

suvh8r,

Check out my webpage, as that will give you a few ideas what to do with the dash controls...once you have that info, consider Lucid's packages as he has what I consider competitive prices. I haven't gone hog-wild yet with amps and such, but the future does hold an upgrade for me. My page should get you started...

Dan -- awesome write up! I really liked the circuit diagram you provided for the remote control adaptor. Someday I'll get around to upgrading the sound system...

I just installed speaker upgrades over the weekend...it makes ALL the difference in the world!!

Lucid Automotive supplied the speakers and the install diagrams were top notch. I recommend going with one of there rear speaker package deals so that you do not have to cut the holes yourself.

Thanks Lucid!!
