The HU or the speakers? The HU was simple enough and there are plenty of DIY's on here for that. The speakers were simple with the exception of having to cut the baskets. I had to cut out the bottoms so that the Alpine's would fit in. Otherwise, it was mostly plug and play to the factory locations. Very easy and straightforward.
yeah, the speakers. hrm.. i dont know if i want to even try modifying the speaker to fit. ill probably screw it up and i porbably dont have the tools to do it.

Spent about $300 and happy with purchase.
Kenwood Excelon - $200 ish.
Polk db651s- $100 ish.

Polks speakers are decent; not the best, but good for price.
Requires zero modifications on doors, no hacking, no need for different speaker bracket/spacer.
Drops in.
will you be going to meets soon. could i check out your speakers?

Nothing to screw up. The tweeters will fit in the same position you have your current tweeters in . The woofers will fit as well after you cut the bottom of the basket out. You could always go the spacer route, but I found it fairly easy to cut the bottom of the basket (also means no new drilling of any kind). Just get a sharp set of cutters.

I'm not a very hands on guy and I have been able to do every mod to the S on my own with just a bit of reading on these forums. So far I have done the new HU, new speakers (tweets and woofs), a new OEM front lip, an OEM replica rear wing spoiler, S badges and soon a new shift boot (shift boot is still being shipped). Trust me, if I can do these things than so can you!

Polk Audio db651s
alpine cda 105 or ALPINE IDA-X303 not sure which one to choose
amps i have no idea same with the roll bar
Personally I don't like the Polk db speakers. You really should audition them in a local mobile audio shop (assuming you have one near you) and other speakers..

Also in your price range you could look at Alpine Type-S and Infinity Reference series components. You can also get Type-R and Kappas in that pricerange from a place like hookedontronics, although you'll want to amp those (they'll work without an amp, but low end will likely be non-existant and you didn't mention any LF upgrades). The Type-S and Reference will be fine with HU power, but an amp will work well for those also obviously (and will sound better).

I love alpine decks, but haven't used either of the ones you mentioned. My last two were the 9857 and the 9887. I'm currently waiting for a Kenwood X994 to test in one of my Integras.

The rear roll hoop speakers you can run off HU power, upgraded or not. They only provide a little rear fill once you upgrade the rest, and only with the top up. At least, I could never hear them otherwise after upgrading the other gear.

Amps.. depends on power needs and what kind of SQ you want. Alpine PDX series might be a good choice. They don't require a ton of power being Class D amps (not that there's all that much difference anyways in power draw, but with the stock alternator I wouldn't go too heavy with amps). If you are going to add a sub to handle LF work, you'll have some additional amp options to consider instead of running two amps..

Honestly, if you want cheap and decent, don't go with an amp for the front channels, just get some upgraded door speakers, upgraded head unit and maybe a small sub/amp, or even something like the Infinity Basslink (it'll fill out the sound, but it's not going to be big tight bass...)

If you don't want to run an amp, I'd go with the A1702 out of those. If you run an amp, you'll need to turn down any of those options (you need a 2 channel, if you get a 4 channel, bridge it to 2 channels). Both put out more power than either of those speakers are rated, so just be careful setting up the amp.

IMO, since you wanted cheap, I'd skip the amp all together and just replace the HU and door speakers. If you do go with an amp and the better speakers, I'd consider adding a subwoofer and either bridging two of those channels (assuming the pioneer lets you just bridge the rear channels) and power the sub off that.
